CANINE FREESTYLE ... aka ... DANCING WITH DOGS
Chelanes Something Special (Zachary) and his owner/trainer Peg Shambaugh

During the summer of 2004, I had the good fortune to meet a lady that is quite remarkable … Peg Shambaugh of Bucyrus, Ohio. She has been training dogs for 50 years in conformation, obedience, and agility and is also the director of a training facility.

I took several of my parti poms up to her for training in conformation, and saw her do some of her “dancing with dogs” routines … otherwise known as Freestyle. I loved the whole thing so much and even got all teary-eyed because it was just so fabulous to watch. She told me about the Freestyle Nationals that she had been to and how she had put a series of “legs” (like the point system in conformation) on several of her dogs. She had even been asked to dance at the banquet at the Freestyle Nationals which is quite an honor.

One of my gorgeous little orange parti poms named Zachary has such a great personality and love of people that I could just imagine what a hit he would be in Freestyle. I offered him to Peg and remember her saying, “Now why would you want to give me this gorgeous little dog when you could sell him for a lot of money?” I replied that he was just too special to sell (hence his name … CHELANES SOMETHING SPECIAL) and that I wanted him to have a very special home. It was history in the making … she took the dog and a star was born!

Peg took Zachary to the 2005 Freestyle Nationals last November, and to her amazement he got his first 2 “legs” at his very first show! Here are a couple of pix of Peg and Zach … and of Zach with all of his “loot” from the show.
